Joanne Stone, M.D.

Director, Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship; Director, Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine; Director, Perinatal Ultrasound; Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Science, Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Dr. Stone is nationally recognized as an expert researcher, clinician and educator specializing in high-risk pregnancies and prenatal diagnostic tests such as ultrasound and chorionic villus sampling (CVS). She has been Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM) since 2006, Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine since 2005 and Director of Perinatal Ultrasound since 1995.

Dr. Stone’s areas of interest also include fetal therapy and multi-fetal pregnancy, and she has a busy consultative and clinical practice.

Dr. Stone is lead author or co-author of dozens of articles including original research, reviews and invited published papers for medical journals such as the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and other publications. She also regularly presents research at medical and scientific conferences and is frequently invited by medical centers and professional societies around the country as a guest lecturer.

Co-author of the books Pregnancy for Dummies and The Pregnancy Bible, Dr. Stone has also written or co-written several published book chapters.

Dr. Stone is currently on MSSM’s Medical School Selection Committee and previously served on the Residency Selection Committee from 1996 – 2006 and on the Internal Review Board (IRB) from 1996-2007. She was MSSM’s Director of Perinatal Research from 2000-2007.

A Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Science since 2009, Dr. Stone’s previous academic appointments at Mount Sinai include Assistant and Associate Professorships of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Science from 1993-2001 and 2001-2009, respectively.

Dr. Stone did her postgraduate training with an OB/GYN Residency and an OB/GYN Fellowship at MSSM’s Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Board certified in Maternal & Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr. Stone is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is a member of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the New York Obstetrical Society (President 2008), the Society for Gynecologic Investigation and the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society.

Dr. Stone received her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a B.A. from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA.
